1. What the Company Does
Howmet Aerospace makes the small, hidden, mission-critical metal parts that let a jet engine survive its own heat. When a modern turbofan runs, gas in the hot section reaches temperatures above the melting point of the nickel alloy the turbine blades are made from. The blades do not melt because they are single-crystal castings with internal cooling passages so fine they are drilled and cast at near-microscopic tolerances, coated with ceramic thermal barriers, and grown as one continuous metal crystal so there are no grain boundaries for cracks to start. Howmet is one of only two companies on earth that can make these parts at scale for the largest engine programs. That is the core of the business.
Around that core sits a family of similarly demanding products: the fasteners that hold an airframe together (a single wide-body aircraft uses hundreds of thousands of them, each one a certified, traceable part), the large titanium and aluminum structural forgings that form the skeleton of a fighter jet, and, in a completely separate end market, the forged aluminum wheels that sit under most heavy trucks in North America and Europe. Roughly 70% of revenue comes from aerospace, split between commercial jets and defense.
The value proposition is narrow and deep: Howmet sells parts where failure is not an option and where the customer (an engine maker like GE Aerospace or Pratt & Whitney, or an airframer like Boeing or Airbus) cannot easily qualify a second source. Getting a new casting or fastener approved onto an engine or airframe program takes years of testing and regulatory sign-off. Once Howmet is designed in and qualified, it tends to stay in for the multi-decade life of the aircraft program, capturing both the original build and the far more profitable stream of spare parts sold over the following thirty years.
The corporate history explains the shape of the business. The lineage runs back to Alcoa, the aluminum company founded in 1888. In 2016 Alcoa split into a commodity-aluminum company (Alcoa Corporation) and a downstream engineered-products company (Arconic Inc.). In April 2020 Arconic split again: the rolled-aluminum sheet business became Arconic Corporation, and the engine parts, fasteners, structures, and forged wheels business became Howmet Aerospace. The name comes from Howmet Castings, a superalloy foundry Alcoa bought in 2000. So the company that looks like a pure-play aerospace supplier today is the highest-value, highest-margin core that survived two decades of a conglomerate shedding everything else around it.

2. Business Segments
Howmet reports four segments. Engine Products is the crown jewel and roughly half the company; the other three are meaningful businesses in their own right.
Engine Products (~52% of FY2025 revenue, ~$4.3bn, +16% YoY)
This segment makes the hot-section and rotating components of jet engines and land-based gas turbines: single-crystal turbine airfoils (blades and vanes), structural castings, forged rings and discs, and the associated coatings. These are the hardest parts in the entire company to make. A single-crystal blade is grown atom-by-atom from a nickel superalloy in a directional-solidification furnace so that the whole part is one crystal with no grain boundaries, then it is machined with internal cooling channels and coated to withstand combustion temperatures. Yield rates on these castings are a closely guarded competitive weapon; a foundry that scraps fewer parts makes far more money on the same furnace time.
The core capability is metallurgical process knowledge accumulated over decades and effectively impossible to buy off a shelf. The customers are the three engine makers that matter: GE Aerospace, RTX's Pratt & Whitney, and Safran (through the CFM joint venture with GE). It exists as a separate segment because its technology, its capital intensity (furnaces, not assembly lines), and its economics are unlike anything else in the group. Its main competitor is Precision Castparts (PCC), the Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary; the two have historically operated as a near-duopoly in large aero-engine castings.
This is the growth engine and the margin engine simultaneously. Q4 2025 EBITDA margin hit 34%, and management is pouring capex and headcount into it (most of the ~1,500 net new employees added in 2025 landed here). It also houses the industrial gas turbine (IGT) business that management now frames as its single most exciting growth vector.
Fastening Systems (~20% of FY2025 revenue, ~$1.7bn, +11% YoY)
This segment makes aerospace fasteners and installation systems: the bolts, rivets, and specialized fittings that hold an airframe and an engine together. A modern aircraft contains hundreds of thousands of fasteners, and in aerospace each one must be certified, traceable, and made to tolerances that keep a pressurized fuselage intact through tens of thousands of flight cycles. The primary customers are Boeing and Airbus for airframes, plus the engine makers. A smaller portion serves commercial transportation (trucks and industrial applications).
The core capability is the combination of precision manufacturing at enormous unit volume with full aerospace certification. Q4 2025 margin was 30.6%. This segment was the target of Howmet's recent M&A: it bought Brunner, a Wisconsin fastener business, for ~$120m in February 2026, and closed the much larger CAM Fastener acquisition for ~$1.8bn in April 2026, a clear signal that management sees fasteners as a place to consolidate and grow. Competitors include TransDigm's fastening businesses and LISI Aerospace of France.
Engineered Structures (~13% of FY2025 revenue, ~$1.1bn, +8% YoY)
This segment makes large structural components for airframes: titanium and aluminum forgings and machined structures, including the primary structural elements of fighter jets. Its signature product is the position as sole-source supplier of the titanium and aluminum bulkheads for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the load-bearing spine of the aircraft. This is a defense-weighted business, and it has ridden the acceleration in fighter production and spares. Q4 2025 margin reached 22%, a level management repeatedly flags as evidence the segment has turned a corner after years of being the group's weakest margin performer. It exists separately because forging and machining large structural parts is a different discipline from casting engine airfoils, with different equipment (giant forging presses) and a different, more defense-concentrated customer base.
Forged Wheels (~12% of FY2025 revenue, ~$1.0bn, roughly flat YoY)
The odd one out. This segment makes forged aluminum wheels for heavy commercial trucks and buses, sold under the Alcoa Wheels brand. Forged aluminum wheels are lighter and more durable than steel, which improves fuel economy and payload for fleet operators. It is a completely different end market (commercial transportation, not aerospace), a different customer base (truck OEMs and fleets), and a different cyclical rhythm (tied to freight and truck-build cycles rather than aircraft deliveries). It stays in the portfolio because it is a high-margin cash generator: Q4 2025 margin was ~30% even as unit volumes fell double digits, with aluminum cost pass-through and pricing offsetting the volume decline. Management runs it for cash and margin rather than growth, and it is periodically the subject of speculation about a divestiture. Competitors include Maxion Wheels and Accuride.

3. Products and Business Detail
The product catalogue maps directly onto the segments but is worth walking through by what each part actually is and why it is hard.
Single-crystal turbine blades and vanes. These sit in the hottest part of a jet engine. They are cast in directional-solidification furnaces as a single continuous metal crystal from proprietary nickel-based superalloys, with internal serpentine cooling passages formed around ceramic cores that are later leached out. The blade is then coated with a thermal barrier coating. The manufacturing constraint is furnace capacity and yield: a large share of parts can crack or come out with the wrong crystal orientation and get scrapped, so the economics turn on process control. Certification is done at the engine-program level, and once a supplier is qualified on a program the switching cost for the engine maker is enormous.
Structural castings and forged rings/discs. Larger engine and airframe parts made by casting or by forging under giant presses, requiring both the metallurgy and the heavy capital equipment. Howmet sold its disc forging operation in Savannah, Georgia for $230m in March 2026, a deliberate pruning of a lower-margin product line to concentrate capital on higher-return casting and airfoil work.
Aerospace fasteners. High-volume, high-precision, fully certified bolts, rivets, and fittings. The moat here is less about single-part difficulty and more about the combination of scale, breadth of qualified part numbers, and the certification burden that keeps new entrants out.
Airframe structures. Titanium and aluminum bulkheads, spars, and machined structural parts, concentrated on defense platforms, most notably the F-35.
Forged aluminum wheels. Made by forging a single billet of aluminum under high pressure, giving a grain structure that is stronger than a cast wheel. Sold globally to truck fleets.
Geographically, Howmet manufactures across the United States, Europe (including the UK, France, Germany, Hungary, and elsewhere), and has operations in Japan, China, Mexico, and Morocco, positioned near the engine and airframe assembly hubs it supplies. The IGT capacity expansion and the bulk of recent capex have concentrated in the US Engine Products footprint.
A defining recent milestone was the capital-allocation pivot visible in early 2026: buying CAM Fastener (~$1.8bn) and Brunner (~$120m) to bulk up fasteners, while selling the Savannah disc forging plant, all inside a few months. Management is actively reshaping the portfolio toward castings, fasteners, and gas turbines, and away from lower-margin forging.
4. Customers
The customer base is concentrated and sophisticated. In aerospace, the direct buyers are a short list: GE Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney (RTX), and Safran/CFM for engine parts; Boeing and Airbus for fasteners and structures; and the US and allied defense primes and governments for defense programs like the F-35. In commercial transportation, the buyers are heavy-truck OEMs and large fleets.
The buying decision inside these customers is made by engineering and procurement working together, and the binding criterion is qualification, not price. A part cannot go onto an engine or airframe until it has passed the customer's and the regulator's testing regime, which can run for years. That makes the sales cycle long at the design-in stage and then extremely sticky afterward. Customers choose Howmet because it is one of very few suppliers that can meet the metallurgical spec at volume with acceptable yield, and because switching a qualified part to a new source means re-testing and re-certifying, a cost and delay few OEMs will accept mid-program.
Switching costs are among the highest in industrial manufacturing. On the engine side, a single-crystal airfoil is qualified to a specific engine program; changing supplier requires re-qualification and regulatory approval. On the F-35 bulkheads, Howmet is the sole source, which is the extreme form of lock-in. The flip side is customer concentration: a handful of engine makers and two airframers drive the bulk of aerospace revenue. Management frames this as a reflection of quality and barriers to entry rather than fragility, and the structure of the industry (there are only two large airframers and three large engine makers) means concentration is unavoidable for anyone in this business.
The revenue has two very different rhythms. Original-equipment (OE) sales track new aircraft build rates and are lumpier and lower-margin. Spare parts, sold to keep the installed fleet flying for decades, are higher-margin and more recurring. In Q1 2026, combined commercial aero, defense aero, and gas turbine spares reached roughly $520m, up 36% year over year, and spares had grown to about 21% of total revenue in 2025 from 17% in 2024. Contracts are typically multi-year supply agreements tied to specific programs, which gives the revenue base solid predictability once you look past quarter-to-quarter build-rate noise.
5. Competitive Landscape
The competitive structure differs by segment, and there is no single competitor that spans Howmet's whole portfolio.
In the highest-value arena, large aero-engine castings and single-crystal airfoils, the market is effectively a duopoly between Howmet and Precision Castparts (PCC), the wholly owned Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary. The two have historically split platforms and engine families, each holding meaningful share on specific programs. This is where Howmet's moat is deepest: the metallurgy, the yield know-how, and the qualification barriers make new entry nearly impossible, and a genuine third scaled competitor has not emerged despite decades of demand.
In fasteners, the field is broader and includes TransDigm (through its fastening businesses), LISI Aerospace of France, and various specialized players. In structures, Howmet competes with other forging and machining houses and is protected on defense platforms by sole-source positions. In specialty alloys, Carpenter Technology is both a supplier of the raw superalloys Howmet consumes and an occasional competitor at the high-performance material edge. In forged wheels, competitors include Maxion Wheels and Accuride.
Barriers to entry in the core casting business are as high as anywhere in industrials: multi-year customer qualification, regulatory certification, decades of accumulated process knowledge, and capital-intensive furnace capacity that only pays off at high yield. That combination is why the duopoly has persisted. The main structural risk to the moat is not a new entrant but vertical integration: an engine maker could in theory bring more casting in-house, though the capital and yield hurdles have kept that limited.

Where Howmet is strong: it sits at the apex of the value chain in engine castings, with the deepest moat and the fattest margins, and it is now consolidating fasteners. Where it is exposed: it depends on a very small number of engine makers and airframers, and PCC (backed by Berkshire's balance sheet) is a formidable, patient competitor that will not be starved of capital.
6. Industry
Demand for Howmet's aerospace products is driven by two forces: how many new aircraft Boeing and Airbus build, and how much the existing global fleet flies (which drives spare-parts demand). Both are strongly positive right now. Airbus and Boeing carry a combined backlog of roughly 15,000-plus commercial aircraft, equivalent to more than a decade of production at current rates. Airbus's A320neo family alone has over 7,000 outstanding orders; Boeing's 737 program has close to 5,000. This backlog is the single most important structural tailwind: it gives multi-year visibility into rising build rates almost regardless of the near-term economy.
The constraint has been supply, not demand. Boeing has been ramping the 737 MAX back toward and beyond an FAA-capped rate of 42 per month, targeting 52; Airbus is pushing the A320 family higher; both remain supply-chain limited. For a parts supplier like Howmet, that means the growth is visible but paced by how fast the airframers and engine makers can lift rates. On the engine side, CFM's LEAP deliveries were up 21% through the first nine months of 2025, and Pratt's geared turbofan backlog exceeded 12,000 engines by mid-2025, both feeding Howmet's engine content.
The aftermarket is the more valuable half of the story. Decade-long delivery backlogs mean airlines are keeping older aircraft flying longer, which drives heavy demand for engine spare parts and MRO (maintenance, repair, overhaul). Spares carry higher margins than OE, and Howmet's spares revenue has been compounding at 30%-plus rates. This is the industry dynamic that has driven Howmet's margin expansion.
A newer demand driver has emerged outside aerospace: industrial gas turbines for electricity generation, specifically to power data centers. The AI-driven surge in electricity demand has revived orders for large gas turbines, which use the same superalloy hot-section technology as jet engines. Howmet has said this base business could double from roughly $1bn to $2bn over three to five years. Defense is a third leg, with fighter production and munitions demand accelerating amid elevated geopolitical tension.
The industry is cyclical over the long run (aircraft build rates fell hard in 2001, 2008-09, and 2020), but the current cycle is unusually supply-constrained rather than demand-constrained, which dampens near-term cyclicality. Regulation is pervasive and acts as a barrier to entry: every part is certified by the airframer, engine maker, and aviation regulators, and defense work carries additional export-control and security requirements. Import dynamics matter less here than in commodity industries because qualification, not price, decides sourcing.

8. Key Risks
Customer and program concentration. Howmet's aerospace fortunes ride on a tiny number of programs and customers: the 737, A320, and a handful of engine platforms. If Boeing stumbles again on the MAX (a quality escape, a regulatory rate cap, a strike, another grounding), Howmet's OE volumes on that platform drop directly. The mechanism is simple: fewer aircraft built means fewer shipsets of parts ordered. This is a high-probability, moderate-drag risk in any given year, and it has bitten before during the 2019-2021 MAX crisis. Management manages it by leaning on the higher-margin spares stream, which does not depend on new build.
Build-rate ramp disappointment. The entire bull case assumes Boeing and Airbus successfully lift production. That ramp has repeatedly slipped across the industry. If the airframers cannot hit the rates management has baked into guidance (737 at 42, A320 at 62, etc.), Howmet's OE growth undershoots. Management itself pegs its guide to specific rate assumptions, which makes the guide only as good as the airframers' execution.
Destocking whipsaw in the supply chain. Howmet flagged a LEAP-engine parts destocking headwind on the Q1 2025 call, where customers worked down inventory and cut orders even as end demand held. This is inherent to being an upstream supplier: small changes in customer inventory policy amplify into larger swings in Howmet's order book. It is a recurring, moderate risk.

M&A integration and valuation. The ~$1.8bn CAM Fastener deal is large. Integration risk, and the risk of having paid a full price near a cyclical peak in aerospace, are real. If aerospace demand cools before the acquisition is fully digested, the deal economics look worse. Probability moderate, impact moderate.
PCC and Berkshire's patient capital. The core casting duopoly is comfortable today, but Precision Castparts is backed by Berkshire Hathaway's effectively unlimited, patient balance sheet. If PCC decides to compete harder on price or capacity to win share on next-generation programs, Howmet's pricing power in its best business could erode. Low probability in the near term, but the highest-impact structural risk.
Cyclicality and a demand shock. Aerospace is cyclical. A recession that grounds air travel, a fuel-price spike, or a geopolitical event that cuts flying would eventually reduce both build rates and spares demand. The decade-long backlog cushions this, but does not eliminate it. Low probability in any given year, high impact if it arrives.
Tariffs and input costs. Management quantified a 2025 gross tariff impact of ~$80m, netting to under $15m after mitigation. Manageable today, but a signal that trade policy is a live variable for a company with a global manufacturing footprint and metal-intensive inputs.
9. Walk the Talk
The six calls reviewed: Q4 2024 (Feb 13, 2025), Q1 2025 (May 1, 2025), Q2 2025 (Jul 31, 2025), Q3 2025 (Oct 30, 2025), Q4 2025 (Feb 12, 2026), and Q1 2026 (May 7, 2026). The most recent is within ~90 days of today.
Start at the beginning of the window. On the Q4 2024 call in February 2025, management set 2025 guidance around $8.03bn of revenue and $3.17 EPS, and told investors that commercial aerospace and defense were both in sustained growth, with defense accelerating on fighter programs and spares. That framing set the tone for the year.
The 2025 quarters then delivered against it, and generally raised the bar each time. Q1 2025 (May) beat, with record first-quarter free cash flow and EPS of $0.86 versus expectations near $0.78; management was candid about the one soft spot, the LEAP destocking headwind, and said it would ease in the back half. That candor matters: they did not bury the negative. Q2 2025 (July) printed records across revenue, EBITDA, EPS, and beat the high end of its own guide, with EPS of $0.91 up 36%, and management raised full-year guidance. Q3 2025 (October) beat again, EPS $0.95 versus $0.91 expected, defense up 24%, commercial spares up 38%, and guidance was raised once more. By the Q4 2025 call in February 2026, the full year had landed at $8.3bn revenue (ahead of the ~$8.03bn originally guided a year earlier) with record margins. Management set a fresh 2026 guide of ~$9.1bn revenue and $4.45 EPS.
Then came the most telling move. Just one quarter into 2026, on the Q1 2026 call in May, management raised the full-year revenue growth guide (ex-M&A) from 10% to 14% and lifted the headline guide to ~$9.65bn revenue and $4.94 EPS, a substantial upward revision only three months after setting it. The Q1 2026 quarter itself beat, with revenue up 19% and EPS up 42%.

Free cash flow floods in, funding a shrinking share count, a fast-growing dividend, and further bolt-on M&A.
