1. What the company does
Vishay Precision Group makes the tiny, unglamorous components that let machines know exactly how much something weighs, how hard it is being pushed or pulled, and how its shape is deforming under stress. If you have ever stepped on an industrial truck scale, watched a rocket engine get qualification-tested, or relied on a crash-test dummy to make a car safer, a VPG sensor was probably doing the measuring.
At its core, VPG sells three things that all descend from the same root technology: ultra-precision resistors, strain gages, and the load cells and instruments built on top of them. A strain gage is a thin metallic foil pattern bonded to a surface; when the surface stretches or compresses by a few millionths of its length, the foil's electrical resistance changes by a measurable amount. Convert that resistance change into a number and you can weigh a 40-tonne truck to within a few kilograms, or detect that a bridge girder is being loaded beyond its design limit. The same foil science, etched into resistor form instead of gage form, produces precision resistors that hold their value to a few parts per million across temperature swings that would make ordinary resistors drift - exactly what you need inside an avionics box, a satellite, or a piece of semiconductor test equipment.
The company is not a startup. It was carved out of Vishay Intertechnology, the large discrete-semiconductor and passive-components maker, in a 2010 spin-off. Vishay Intertechnology itself had been built by Felix Zandman, who invented the bonded foil resistor in the 1950s and 1960s; the precision-measurement piece of that empire became VPG. So the company inherited 60-plus years of foil-technology process knowledge and a portfolio of brands that engineers in narrow fields have trusted for decades. The current CEO, Ziv Shoshani, is a long-tenured Vishay-world executive, and the founder's family (the Zandman/Segal interests) still holds the Class B super-voting stock that controls the company.
The value proposition is precision plus reliability in places where being wrong is expensive or dangerous. A general-purpose load cell from a low-cost Asian supplier is fine for a bathroom scale. It is not fine for a legal-for-trade weighbridge that determines how much a customer pays for a shipment of grain, or for a force sensor inside a medical infusion pump, or for the strain instrumentation on a hypersonic test article. VPG's pitch is that its parts hold their accuracy over years and over temperature, that they are qualified to demanding standards, and that switching them out means re-qualifying an entire system.
Management frames the whole company around a simple idea repeated across calls: VPG sells "precision sensors and sensor-based systems" into applications where measurement accuracy is mission-critical, not commodity. The newer overlay on that old base is that AI data centers, defense, and humanoid robots all need a lot more precise measurement than the markets VPG grew up serving.
A concrete walk-through: a maker of semiconductor automated test equipment (ATE) needs to apply precisely controlled electrical loads while testing chips. It designs VPG's Bulk Metal foil precision resistors into the test head because their resistance barely drifts with temperature or time, which keeps the test results repeatable across thousands of cycles. Once that resistor is designed into the board and the board is qualified, VPG ships those resistors for the production life of that test platform. The customer is not shopping that part on price every quarter; the cost of re-qualifying a cheaper substitute dwarfs the few dollars saved.
2. Business segments
VPG runs three reporting segments. They share a common technology root (foil-based sensing) but sell to different customers through different channels and brands.
Sensors (the technology core and the largest segment)
The Sensors segment is the precision-resistor and strain-gage business - the part of VPG closest to the original Vishay foil invention. The core capability here is process knowledge that has compounded for six decades. Making a foil resistor that holds a few parts-per-million stability requires control over the foil alloy, the rolling and annealing, the photo-etch pattern, and the trimming - a recipe that is not in a textbook and is hard to reverse-engineer. That is why this segment carries the highest margins in the group and why management treats it as the technology engine. In recent quarters it has also become the growth engine: the Q1 FY2026 call reported Sensors revenue up 23% year over year with a 1.36 book-to-bill, the highest in 15 quarters, driven by precision resistors for semiconductor equipment and AI data-center / fiber-optic build-out (Q1 FY2026 concall, May 12 2026).
Competitively, Sensors faces Bourns and KOA in resistors and a fragmented field in strain gages, but VPG sits at the top accuracy tier where few can follow. This is the segment that anchors the company's claim to a genuine moat.
Weighing Solutions (the volume / cash segment)
Weighing Solutions takes strain-gage technology and packages it into load cells, force transducers, and complete weighing modules and systems. Brands include Celtron, Revere, Sensortronics, Tedea-Huntleigh, BLH Nobel, and VPG Transducers. End markets are industrial: truck and rail weighing (transportation), precision agriculture, construction, medical equipment, and process/industrial weighing.
The capability here is less about exotic physics and more about volume manufacturing of accurate, durable, legal-for-trade load cells across a broad catalogue, plus the application engineering to turn cells into systems. It exists as a separate segment because the customer base (OEMs and integrators building scales and weighing systems) and the economics (higher volume, more competitive) differ from the discrete-component Sensors business.
Competitively this is the most contested segment - HBK (the Hottinger Brüel & Kjær / Spectris group), Minebea, Flintec, and Zemic all compete in load cells, and the lower-accuracy end is genuinely commoditized with Chinese supply. VPG's defense is brand trust, accuracy at the legal-for-trade tier, and breadth. The product catalogue tracks the segments but is worth naming in detail because each brand serves a distinct niche:
Precision resistors and strain gages (Sensors):
- Bulk Metal Foil resistors (VFR / Vishay Foil Resistors, Alpha Electronics, Powertron) - the flagship: resistors with extremely low temperature coefficient and long-term stability, used where drift is unacceptable (avionics, space, medical, test equipment, precision references). 4. Customers
VPG's customers are almost entirely other businesses - OEMs, test labs, defense primes and agencies, steel and aluminum producers, scale and weighing-system builders, medical-device makers, and semiconductor-equipment manufacturers. The buyer is usually a design engineer or a procurement-plus-engineering team, not a consumer.
The buying decision differs by segment. For Sensors, the decision-maker is a design engineer choosing a component for a new board or instrument; the criteria are accuracy specs, stability over temperature and time, qualification/reliability data, and long-term availability. The sales cycle is long because the part gets designed in, but once designed in it tends to ship for the life of the host product. For Weighing Solutions, the buyer is often an OEM or systems integrator choosing load cells for a scale platform; criteria include accuracy class (legal-for-trade matters), durability, certifications, and price - this is a more competitive, more price-sensitive purchase. VPG sits in the precision sensors, force-measurement, and test-and-measurement instrumentation industry - a fragmented, multi-billion-dollar global space spanning components (resistors, strain gages, load cells) and systems (weighing, data acquisition, materials testing).
Demand drivers are broad and industrial: capital spending by steel and aluminum producers, transportation and agriculture equipment cycles, defense and space budgets, medical-device production, semiconductor capital equipment, and - newly - AI infrastructure and robotics. Because the company supplies measurement into so many end markets, aggregate demand tracks global industrial production and capex, with defense/space providing a counter-cyclical layer and the AI/robotics theme providing a secular growth layer on top.
Size and growth: the precision-resistor, strain-gage, load-cell, and test-and-measurement markets are each multi-billion-dollar globally and historically grow at low-to-mid single digits with GDP and industrial capex. The differentiated, high-accuracy niches VPG targets grow faster when a structural demand pool opens - which is exactly the AI/semiconductor/robotics story management is leaning on for its 8-10% organic-growth target.
Supply-chain position: VPG is a component and subsystem supplier sitting upstream of OEMs and integrators. In foil resistors and strain gages it is near the top of the value chain in accuracy terms; in weighing it is one of several global suppliers; in measurement systems it is a turnkey integrator selling directly to end users.
Regulation and certification shape the moat more than they shape the market size: legal-for-trade weighing standards, aerospace/defense qualification (and the associated reliability data), and medical-device requirements all raise switching costs and favor incumbents with track records.
Cyclicality is the defining feature. The story across these six calls is a management team calling a bottom and then, slowly, being proven right - with a consistent through-line on cost discipline and a steadily rising (and so far delivered-against) business-development target.
Start at Q4 FY2024. Coming out of a brutal downcycle, management called a turn: book-to-bill hit 1.0, "the first positive result in eight quarters," and they set a $30M new-business-development revenue target for 2025 (up from $18M in 2024), promised at least $5M in additional annual cost reductions, and sketched a $100M cumulative new-revenue opportunity over three to four years across robotics, data centers, medical, and aerospace. This was an ambitious set of claims from a company still shrinking.
By Q1 FY2025 the recovery call got more explicit. Shoshani said the trough was in:
"We have hit this trough, and there is a continuation of a modest recovery going forward." (Q1 FY2025, May 6 2025) Revenue that quarter actually fell year over year (to $71.7M) and missed expectations, so the "trough" claim was a forward bet, not a delivered result. But the leading indicators backed it: orders and book-to-bill ticked up, humanoid orders crossed $1M, and the $5M cost program and $30M BD target were reaffirmed.
Through Q2 FY2025 and Q3 FY2025, the team delivered on the things it could control. The $5M cost program showed progress ($2.8M captured by H1). The $30M BD target was tracked transparently quarter by quarter - $17M YTD at Q2, $26M YTD at Q3, described as "on track." Margins improved sequentially (adjusted gross margin from ~38% in Q1 to ~41% in Q2), and Weighing Solutions posted record margins even on soft volume, validating the cost story. They also did what they said on the balance sheet - sold a building for ~$11M and cut debt and interest (Q2 FY2025). The recovery itself was uneven (Weighing orders fell in Q3, steel stayed soft, the government shutdown delayed defense bookings), but management flagged each of these honestly rather than papering over them.
By Q4 FY2025 and Q1 FY2026 the bet paid off. Consolidated book-to-bill, stuck at 1.0 for several quarters, jumped to 1.21 in Q1 FY2026 - the strongest since 2022 - led by Sensors at 1.36. Revenue grew 18% year over year in Q1 FY2026. On that strength, management raised the bar: a new $45M BD target for 2026 (from $30M), an extended $20M cost program (from $5M/year), and a formal three-year 8-10% organic-growth operating model. They even raised the internal 2026 projection mid-year on customer ramp forecasts.
The credibility verdict: this is a management team that, over these six calls, did what it said on the controllable levers (cost reductions, debt reduction, BD-order targets, margin improvement) and was directionally right on the harder forecast (the trough and recovery), albeit with the recovery arriving a couple of quarters after it was first called. The pattern is consistent and conservative-to-accurate on operations, with one area to watch: the newer, headier targets (humanoid 50% CAGR, 8-10% organic growth) are forward bets riding a strong but young upcycle, and the earlier $100M cumulative opportunity has been reframed rather than reconciled. Track record favors believing the cost and BD-order commitments; the macro-levered growth ambition deserves the usual skepticism applied to a cyclical at the start of an upturn.

10. Shareholder friendliness index
Dividends: VPG pays no dividend and has never paid one. DPS for each of the last three fiscal years (2023, 2024, 2025) was $0.00. Management's stated policy is to reinvest in the business and to return capital, when it does, through buybacks and M&A rather than a dividend. There is nothing unusual to explain beyond the consistent absence.
Buybacks and dilution: VPG has run an opportunistic, modest repurchase program rather than a large standing one. The most recent authorized program repurchased an aggregate of 455,101 shares for about $14.5M and expired in August 2024 (VPG Form 10-Q, FY2024). Treasury-stock purchases in the first nine months of 2024 were about $7.8M (versus ~$1.2M in the same period of 2023), so the bulk of repurchase activity clustered in 2024 before the program lapsed. AI data-center power and interconnect demand keeps pulling precision resistors out of the Sensors segment, semiconductor test capex stays strong, and the defense/space pipeline (DTS, Artemis-class programs) compounds. The humanoid-robotics bet, dismissed today as a rounding error, actually inflects: a couple of the developers VPG ships to reach real production volumes, and the 50% CAGR assumption looks conservative because each robot carries tens of sensors at $500-$1,200 of content. Meanwhile the $20M cost program and the new operations leadership deliver the promised margin expansion, so the 8-10% organic growth lands on a higher-margin base and operating margin climbs toward the mid-teens target. The clean balance sheet funds a smart bolt-on acquisition that adds a new high-accuracy niche. Two to three years out, VPG is a structurally faster-growing, higher-margin business whose Sensors segment is recognized as a genuine AI/robotics picks-and-shovels supplier.
Base case. The recovery is real but bumpy, as it has been all along. Sensors keeps leading on AI and semiconductor demand, Weighing Solutions grows slowly while defending margins through cost work, and Measurement Systems stays lumpy - good defense/space quarters offset by soft steel. Book-to-bill hovers around or modestly above 1.0, revenue grows at roughly the lower end of the 8-10% target, and the cost program delivers enough to nudge margins up without fully hitting the 46.5% gross-margin / mid-teens operating-margin goals on schedule. Humanoid revenue grows from a tiny base and remains a promising option rather than a needle-mover. Management keeps doing what it says on costs and BD orders, the family-controlled structure stays in place, and the stock behaves like the cyclical-with-a-secular-kicker it is. Nothing breaks; nothing dramatically beats.
Bear case. The Q1 FY2026 order spike proves to be inventory restocking and AI-capex front-loading, not durable demand. By late 2026 book-to-bill rolls back below 1.0, and because VPG is book-and-ship with no long-term contracts, revenue gives back its gains quickly. Steel stays soft, defense orders keep slipping on budget timing, and the humanoid-robotics story stalls as OEMs delay mass production - removing the headline growth narrative without ever having added real revenue. The $5M/year of new organizational investment becomes dead weight against falling volumes, so margins compress instead of expanding and the 8-10% operating model is quietly shelved, denting management's hard-won credibility. Chinese competition keeps grinding Weighing margins. The controlled-company structure means minority holders have little leverage to force a response. The company survives comfortably (net cash, no dividend to defend), but it reverts to being a slow-growing, deeply cyclical components maker whose AI-and-robotics re-rating unwinds.
