Lumentum Holdings Inc. (LITE) - Deep Dive Research Report

1. What the Company Does
Lumentum makes the lasers and optical parts that move data as pulses of light. When two computers talk to each other across a data center, or when a phone call crosses an ocean, the information does not travel as electricity the whole way. At some point it becomes light shot down a strand of glass fiber, because light carries vastly more data per second and loses far less energy over distance than copper wire. Lumentum builds the tiny semiconductor lasers that generate that light, the components that shape and amplify it, and increasingly the finished pluggable modules (transceivers) that convert electrical signals to optical and back.
The company's center of gravity has shifted violently over the last three years. Lumentum used to be known to most investors as "the Apple 3D-sensing company" - its VCSEL lasers powered Face ID on the iPhone - plus a solid telecom-components business. Today it is one of the handful of companies whose lasers and optics are physically required to build an AI data center. Every Nvidia GPU cluster is stitched together by optical interconnects, and those interconnects need EML laser chips, transceivers, and (soon) co-packaged optics. Lumentum sells into exactly that chokepoint.
The founding story explains the DNA. Lumentum was spun out of JDS Uniphase (JDSU) on August 1, 2015, inheriting the Communications and Commercial Optical Products division; the other half of JDSU became Viavi Solutions (SEC 8-K, 2015). JDSU itself was the poster child of the 2000 telecom bubble, once worth over $80 billion, and its collapse taught the optics industry a permanent lesson about cyclicality. Lumentum then bought its way to scale in indium phosphide (InP) laser technology through Oclaro ($1.8 billion, 2018), added high-speed coherent optics via NeoPhotonics (2022), and made its decisive pivot into cloud data-center transceivers by acquiring Cloud Light for roughly $750 million in late 2023 (Semi Fundamental history). That Cloud Light deal, which looked pricey at the time, is the single reason Lumentum has a finished-transceiver franchise to ride the AI wave.
The core value proposition is scarce, hard-to-replicate manufacturing. Making a datacom EML laser is not a design problem you solve once; it is a decades-long process of learning how to grow indium phosphide wafers with the right defect density, cleave and coat them, and get economic yield at 200-gigabit-per-lane speeds. There are only a few companies on earth that can do it at volume, and their combined capacity currently falls roughly 30% short of what AI customers want to buy. CEO Michael Hurlston put the situation bluntly on the Q3 FY2026 call:
"We continue to lag demand... the supply-demand imbalance is probably even higher than we reported, somewhere greater than 30%." (Q3 FY2026 concall, May 5, 2026)
A concrete example of what Lumentum actually does: an Nvidia-based AI cluster needs to connect thousands of GPUs. Inside each optical transceiver plugged into a switch, there sits a Lumentum EML laser chip that flickers on and off billions of times a second to encode data, plus the driver and packaging around it. When the industry moves from 800-gigabit to 1.6-terabit links, each connection needs faster, higher-power lasers - which Lumentum sells at higher margins. And as the industry starts to move the optics directly next to the switch chip (co-packaged optics, or CPO), the transceiver disappears but the laser does not; it becomes an external laser source that Lumentum still supplies. Lumentum wins on every version of this roadmap because all of them consume its scarcest product: the laser.
2. Business Segments
Lumentum reports two segments: Cloud & Networking and Industrial Tech. In FY2025 (ended June 28, 2025), Cloud & Networking generated about $1.41 billion (roughly 86% of revenue, up ~30% year over year), while Industrial Tech generated about $234 million (roughly 14%, down ~15%) (FY2025 10-K). Note that Lumentum also describes its revenue along a second axis, Components versus Systems, which cuts across the segments and is the framing management uses most often on calls.
2.1 Cloud & Networking (the engine)
What it does. This is essentially the whole company now. It houses everything that moves data optically: the datacom laser chips (EMLs, CW lasers, pump lasers) sold as components to transceiver makers and to Nvidia's CPO ecosystem; Lumentum's own finished cloud transceivers (800G, ramping to 1.6T); optical circuit switches (OCS) that physically reroute light paths inside a data center; and the legacy telecom transport products (ROADMs, pump lasers, coherent components) that carry long-haul and metro network traffic. The end customers split into two camps: hyperscale cloud and AI operators (the growth), and telecom system vendors like the makers of carrier networking gear (the mature base).
The core capability. Indium phosphide laser fabrication at scale. This is the crown jewel and the thing that took decades and roughly $2 billion of acquisitions to assemble. Growing InP epitaxial wafers, getting EMLs to run reliably at 200G per lane, and pushing yields high enough to make money is process knowledge that does not transfer by hiring a few engineers. Lumentum reported its EML shipments more than doubled year over year and that it is on track for 50%-plus EML unit growth from December 2025 to December 2026 (Q3 FY2026 concall, May 5, 2026). The pump-laser and narrow-linewidth-laser lines, up 80% and 120% year over year respectively, draw on the same physics and fab base.
Why it exists as one segment. These businesses share fabs, laser physics, and customers. A telecom pump laser and an AI EML are made on adjacent tools using the same materials science; combining them lets Lumentum flex capacity toward whichever end market is paying more, which right now is unambiguously AI.
Competitive position. Its main peer is Coherent, which has a broader portfolio (materials, transceivers, its own InP). In merchant datacom laser chips and transceivers, Lumentum also competes with Chinese module makers (InnoLight, Eoptolink) who buy chips, and with Broadcom and Marvell on the silicon-photonics and DSP side. Lumentum wins on laser-chip depth and Nvidia's explicit endorsement; it is more exposed where a customer wants a fully integrated silicon-photonics-plus-DSP solution, an area where Broadcom is strong.
How it fits the group. This is the margin engine and the growth bet simultaneously. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 32.2% in Q3 FY2026 from roughly 11% a year earlier, driven almost entirely by this segment's volume and mix. Management's entire narrative is about scaling it.
2.2 Industrial Tech (the shrinking legacy)
What it does. Commercial and ultrafast lasers used in advanced manufacturing (cutting, welding, drilling, solar-cell and semiconductor processing) plus 3D-sensing components. The 3D-sensing piece is the VCSEL laser business that historically supplied consumer electronics, most famously Apple's Face ID depth sensing, and is being repositioned toward industrial machine-vision applications.
The core capability. VCSEL array design and high-power ultrafast laser engineering. The ultrafast lasers in particular serve niche, high-precision tool makers; management flagged near-record ultrafast demand from a leading tool supplier serving high-volume solar-cell manufacturing (FY2025 10-K).
Why it is separate. Completely different customers (machine-tool builders, consumer OEMs), different economics, and a different cycle. It is the remnant of the old Lumentum before the AI pivot. Revenue fell about 15% in FY2025, dragged by the consumer-electronics/3D-sensing rolloff and soft industrial demand.
Competitive position and group fit. It competes with Coherent (again), IPG Photonics, and MKS/Newport in industrial lasers. Within the group it is now a strategic option rather than a driver: a source of laser IP and a lever into industrial machine vision, but not where management spends its airtime. On recent calls it is barely discussed relative to cloud and networking.

3. Products and Business Detail
Lumentum's catalogue is best understood along the Components/Systems split management uses.
Components (roughly two-thirds of revenue, ~$533M in Q3 FY2026).
- EML (electro-absorption modulated laser) chips - the heart of a high-speed datacom transceiver. These encode data at 100G and now 200G per optical lane. The move to 200G is a key ASP and margin lever: management said 200G EMLs went from ~5% of unit volume to a target of ~25% of the mix by year-end, and 200G EML revenue more than doubled sequentially in Q3 FY2026.
- CW (continuous-wave) lasers and external laser sources (ELS) - lasers that feed silicon-photonics engines and co-packaged optics. In CPO the transceiver goes away but an external laser source stays, and Lumentum says an ELS module carries "two to two-and-a-half times the revenue content" of a bare laser (Q2 FY2026 concall, Feb 3, 2026). Nvidia publicly named Lumentum as its supplier of single high-power DFB lasers for CPO (SemiAnalysis, Jan 2026).
- Pump lasers and narrow-linewidth laser assemblies - used in optical amplifiers and in "scale-across" networking that links AI clusters over distance. Both were growing triple- and double-digits and, unexpectedly, became supply-constrained in FY2026.
- Telecom/coherent components - ROADMs and the coherent optics inherited from NeoPhotonics, serving carrier transport networks.
Systems (roughly one-third, ~$275M in Q3 FY2026).
- Cloud transceivers - the finished 800G and 1.6T pluggable modules, the Cloud Light franchise. Shipments grew 40%-plus sequentially in Q3 FY2026, and management expects the 1.6T ramp to lift margins because 1.6T carries better economics than 800G.
- Optical Circuit Switch (OCS) - an all-optical switch that reroutes light paths without converting to electrical, used by hyperscalers to make AI fabrics more efficient. Lumentum won a "multiyear, multibillion-dollar" OCS purchase agreement and called OCS "the biggest single tightrope" it faces, meaning demand is real but the supply chain is the bottleneck (Q3 FY2026 concall, May 5, 2026).
Manufacturing and geography. The scarce step is indium phosphide wafer fabrication. Lumentum runs InP fabs in San Jose (California), Caswell (UK), and Sagamihara/Takao (Japan), and it acquired a fifth InP fab in Greensboro, North Carolina, which it is converting from gallium arsenide - capacity from that site is "six or so quarters away" and not yet in guidance (Q3 FY2026 concall, May 5, 2026). Final module assembly and test lean heavily on Thailand, where contract manufacturer Fabrinet is a critical partner. Lumentum delivered more than half of a targeted 40% InP wafer-capacity increase within a single quarter (Q2 FY2026 concall) and is negotiating customer prepayments, take-or-pay commitments, and price increases to underwrite further expansion. Quarterly capex ran about $125 million in Q3 FY2026, almost entirely for cloud/AI capacity.
Milestones that reshaped the business. JDSU spin-off (2015); Oclaro/InP (2018); NeoPhotonics/coherent (2022); Cloud Light/transceivers (late 2023); the Nvidia $2 billion strategic investment and multibillion-dollar purchase commitment (announced March 2, 2026); and the Greensboro fifth-fab acquisition (2026), which management framed as a potential path to more than $5 billion of incremental CPO-related revenue if executed.
4. Customers
Who buys. Two very different cohorts. On the growth side, hyperscale cloud and AI operators and their networking suppliers - most importantly Nvidia, which is now both a customer, a strategic investor, and a design partner. Beyond Nvidia, the buyers are the large cloud operators building AI clusters and the transceiver/module makers who consume Lumentum's laser chips. On the legacy side, telecom system vendors buy coherent and transport components, and industrial tool makers and consumer OEMs buy lasers and VCSELs.
Who decides and on what criteria. For AI/datacom components, the buying decision sits with the hyperscaler's or Nvidia's hardware and supply-chain architects, and the criteria are brutal and simple: can you supply enough qualified parts, on a roadmap to the next speed node, at acceptable yield, on time. In a supply-short market, availability and committed capacity trump price. Qualification cycles for a new laser into an AI platform run many months and involve reliability testing that a buyer will not casually repeat with a second vendor mid-ramp.
Why they choose Lumentum. Depth in indium phosphide lasers that few can match, an existing high-volume transceiver operation (Cloud Light), and now an explicit Nvidia endorsement and co-investment. When Nvidia puts $2 billion of equity and a multibillion-dollar purchase commitment into you, you become a strategically de-risked supplier for the rest of the ecosystem.
Switching costs. High in the near term. A qualified EML chip inside a shipping transceiver platform is locked in for that generation; requalifying a competitor's laser mid-ramp risks yield and schedule. Long-term agreements deepen the lock: management said essentially all EML capacity is booked under LTAs through 2027, and that customers are asking for more committed capacity, which lets Lumentum optimize price (Q2 FY2026 concall, Feb 3, 2026).
Concentration. High and rising. Lumentum has historically had customer concentration (a small number of large accounts drive a big share of revenue), and the Nvidia relationship intensifies it. This is both a quality signal (the most important customer in AI chose you) and a risk (your fortunes are tethered to one buyer's capex plans).
Contract structure. The mix is shifting from spot toward committed. LTAs, take-or-pay terms, prepayments, and multiyear/multibillion-dollar purchase agreements (OCS, the Nvidia commitment) now underpin a growing share of the book, which improves revenue visibility relative to Lumentum's historically cyclical spot-heavy past. The flip side is that these commitments are only as good as the AI capex cycle behind them.
5. Competitive Landscape
The optics supply chain has layers, and Lumentum plays in the laser-chip and transceiver layers. Understanding who it competes with requires separating those layers.
Coherent (COHR) is the closest and broadest rival. It makes its own InP lasers, transceivers, and optical materials, and it received the other $2 billion of Nvidia's $4 billion optical investment on the same day as Lumentum (tradingkey, 2026). Coherent is the scale leader in datacom optical components; in 2023 datacom-component share it held about 18% versus Lumentum's roughly 10% (Cignal AI / market data). Lumentum competes on laser depth and its transceiver franchise; it is behind Coherent on sheer breadth and materials integration.
Chinese transceiver makers - InnoLight, Eoptolink, Accelink dominate finished-module assembly. InnoLight and Eoptolink are the largest datacom module suppliers by volume. They are more customers-of-chips than competitors at the laser layer, but they compete directly with Lumentum's own Cloud Light transceivers. Their advantage is assembly cost and speed; their vulnerability is dependence on merchant laser chips and DSPs, several of which are supply-constrained.
Broadcom (AVGO) competes in the silicon-photonics and DSP layer, offering integrated solutions (PAM4 DSPs, its own silicon-photonics platform, VCSELs). Where a customer wants a vertically integrated photonics-plus-DSP switch solution, Broadcom is the threat; Lumentum answers with laser depth and the CPO external-laser-source role.
Marvell (MRVL) competes in coherent DSPs and 400ZR/pluggable coherent (via its Inphi and Acacia assets), overlapping Lumentum's telecom/coherent components.
Ayar Labs (private) is the venture-backed CPO startup that, like Lumentum, is named in Nvidia's laser-partner list; it targets DFB laser arrays and optical I/O and is a longer-dated competitive and ecosystem consideration.
Barriers to entry are genuinely high at the laser-chip layer (fabs, process knowledge, qualification, capital) and much lower at the module-assembly layer (which is why Chinese assemblers proliferate). Lumentum sits deliberately at the high-barrier end. The structural shift underway is threefold: the speed migration from 800G to 1.6T, the emergence of CPO (which reshapes but does not eliminate laser demand), and Nvidia vertically de-risking its optical supply by co-investing in the two Western laser leaders. Lumentum is strong where lasers are scarce and exposed where integration and DSP capability matter more than the light source.

6. Industry
What drives demand. In the near term, one thing above all: AI data-center capex. Training and running large models requires connecting tens of thousands of GPUs, and those connections are optical. Every incremental gigawatt of AI compute pulls through a roughly proportional quantity of lasers, transceivers, and switches. Secondary drivers are the ongoing 800G-to-1.6T speed migration (which raises optical content per port), the shift toward co-packaged optics (which raises laser content even as it removes transceivers), telecom network upgrades, and, in Industrial Tech, factory automation, solar-cell manufacturing, and machine vision.
Size and growth. The optical transceiver market is in a steep up-cycle; 800GbE optics shipments were forecast to grow roughly 60% in 2025, with 1.6T layering on top (Cignal AI, 2025). Nvidia's own $4 billion investment across Lumentum and Coherent is itself a demand signal about the scale of optical content in future AI factories, with co-packaged silicon photonics expected to reach volume production around late 2027 (io-fund, 2026).
Where Lumentum sits in the chain. Upstream, at the laser-chip and component layer, which is the current bottleneck. It sells chips to module makers, finished modules to cloud operators, and external laser sources into the emerging CPO stack. Being upstream of a shortage is the best place to be in an up-cycle and the worst place to be in a glut.
Regulation and supply chain. The key regulatory overlay is US-China technology tension: export controls and the broader effort to onshore advanced photonics manufacturing (the Nvidia deals explicitly fund new US fabs, and Lumentum's Greensboro fab fits that theme). Chinese module makers face restrictions on some US-origin chips, which can advantage Western suppliers but also risks Chinese customers designing them out.
Cyclicality. The optics industry is historically boom-bust; JDSU's implosion is the cautionary tale in Lumentum's own family tree. The pattern is capacity chasing a demand spike, then a glut when hyperscaler orders pause. The current cycle is unusually supply-constrained, which is delaying the glut, but the long-run cyclicality has not been repealed.
Tailwinds and headwinds. Tailwinds: AI capex, speed migration, CPO content growth, onshoring subsidies, Nvidia sponsorship. Headwinds: dependence on a narrow set of hyperscaler budgets, the risk that CPO commoditizes some transceiver value, Chinese competition at the module layer, and the ever-present possibility that AI infrastructure spending digests after a build-out.

8. Key Risks
AI capex concentration and a single dominant customer. Lumentum's growth is tethered to hyperscaler AI infrastructure budgets, and increasingly to Nvidia specifically as customer, investor, and design partner. If AI infrastructure spending pauses or digests after the current build-out, or if Nvidia shifts optical allocation toward Coherent or in-house/CPO paths, the order book that looks bulletproof today could soften fast. This is a high-impact risk; the LTAs mitigate near-term timing but not the underlying dependence.
Supply-chain execution, not demand, is the binding constraint. Management repeatedly frames the problem as its own inability to build fast enough. OCS was called "the biggest single tightrope," and the pump-laser shortage arrived "relatively suddenly" and "somewhat unanticipated" (Q3 FY2026 concall, May 5, 2026). The mechanism: revenue that is booked can still be missed if wafers, hermetic packages, or a single sub-component fall short, and the Greensboro capacity that underwrites the next leg is six quarters away. This is a high-probability moderate-to-serious drag on the pace of the ramp.

That quote is bullish on demand and simultaneously a candid admission that execution, and rationing scarce parts among powerful customers, is a live risk.
The optics cyclicality trap. The industry's history, including JDSU's own collapse, is capacity racing demand into a glut. Lumentum is committing heavy capex and take-or-pay terms into a spike; if demand normalizes after capacity lands, margins that expanded 2,000-plus basis points on tight supply can compress just as fast. Lower probability in the next year given the shortage, but structurally the defining risk of the sector.
CPO could reshape transceiver economics. Co-packaged optics is a tailwind for Lumentum's laser content but a potential headwind for its finished-transceiver (Cloud Light) business, since CPO removes the pluggable module. If CPO adoption is faster or more value-shifting than expected, part of the acquired transceiver franchise could be disrupted even as laser demand grows.
Balance-sheet and dilution dynamics. Lumentum has been converting low-coupon convertible notes into equity and issued equity to Nvidia, expanding the share count. The mechanism: existing holders share future earnings across more shares. It reduces leverage and adds flexibility, but it is dilution, and it matters in a business where per-share value depends on a volume ramp landing.

Note a leadership change spans this window: Alan Lowe led through the Q2 FY2025 call, and Michael Hurlston (formerly of Synaptics) took over as CEO in early 2025, presiding from Q3 FY2025 onward. That matters, because the credibility story is really about the Hurlston-era guidance.
Start with the anchor promise. On the Q4 FY2025 call, management set a public marker:
"We expect to surpass $600 million in quarterly revenue by the fiscal fourth quarter ending June 27, 2026, or earlier, with gross margins near or above 40% and operating margins above 20%." (Q4 FY2025 concall, Aug 12, 2025)
That is a specific, datable, checkable commitment. What happened next is the strongest evidence for this management's credibility. One quarter later, on the Q1 FY2026 call, they guided Q2 FY2026 to a $630-670 million midpoint - already above the $600 million target, two quarters ahead of the June 2026 deadline (Q1 FY2026 concall, Nov 4, 2025). Then Q2 FY2026 actuals came in around $665 million (components $443.7M + systems $221.8M), and Q3 FY2026 delivered $808 million with 47.9% gross margin and 32.2% operating margin (Q3 FY2026 concall, May 5, 2026). Every element of the Q4 FY2025 promise - the revenue level, the 40% gross margin, the 20% operating margin - was not just met but cleared, and cleared early. This is management under-promising and over-delivering.
The guidance-to-actual pattern reinforces it quarter by quarter. Q2 FY2026 was guided to a $805 million Q3 midpoint; Q3 came in at $808 million, essentially on the nose, then Q4 was guided up to a $985 million midpoint. The OCS business is another kept promise: on the Q2 FY2026 call management said OCS cleared its first $10 million quarter "three months ahead of the originally scheduled fiscal Q3 timing" (Q2 FY2026 concall, Feb 3, 2026), a small but telling instance of beating a self-set internal milestone.
Where has management been less than perfectly clean? Two places. First, the supply-side surprises: the pump-laser shortage was described as "somewhat unanticipated" and arriving "relatively suddenly" (Q3 FY2026 concall), an admission that their own supply forecasting missed something, even if the miss was a high-class problem (too much demand). Second, some of the biggest value drivers - the multi-rail opportunity, the full CPO/ELS revenue - remain deferred and unquantified, so there is a growing stack of "bigger than we've said, details later" claims that are not yet checkable. That is not overpromising in the classic sense, but it is a body of forward optimism that future quarters will have to validate.
The honest assessment: over the last six quarters, and specifically under Hurlston, this is management that does what it says and then does more. The central, dated, quantified promise (the $600M/40%/20% target) was cleared two quarters early on every dimension, and quarterly guidance has been accurate to consistently conservative. The caveat is that the demand environment has been extraordinarily favorable, so this credibility has not yet been tested in a downturn, where the real test of any optics management team lies.

10. Shareholder Friendliness Index
Dividends. Lumentum has never paid a cash dividend. It was spun out of JDSU in 2015 as a capital-intensive growth company and has consistently reinvested cash into fabs, acquisitions, and capacity rather than distributions. There is no dividend trend to assess; the policy is simply "none," and given the current capacity land-grab, none is planned.
Buybacks and dilution. The board authorized a $700 million repurchase program in May 2021, raised to $1.0 billion in March 2022, and Lumentum was an active buyer during FY2021-FY2022, including repurchasing about 2.0 million shares at roughly $99 in a privately negotiated transaction alongside its 2028 convertible issuance (SEC filings; TipRanks). MoatMap records zero buybacks in the trailing ~90 days, consistent with the current posture. Since the AI pivot, the direction has reversed from retiring shares to creating them: in 2026 Lumentum exchanged roughly $474.6 million of convertible notes for about 5.7 million shares, then another ~$650.4 million of 2028 notes for about 5.0 million shares (~0.8 million incremental), and separately issued equity to Nvidia in its $2 billion investment (StockTitan 8-K). Buys - read the signal. There are none. Zero open-market purchases by any insider in the trailing 12 months. There is no bullish insider-buying signal to report.
Sells - work out the why. The selling clusters tightly in May-June 2026, immediately after the Q3 FY2026 blowout (reported May 5, 2026) and the Nvidia-driven stock surge that pushed the shares into the $860-$1,000 range - roughly a doubling from where the stock traded before the AI re-rating. The pattern is textbook post-run, post-earnings-window diversification: officers (CFO Ali, GC Kim, President Yuen, Vincent Retort) sold on the same days at nearly identical prices, which is the fingerprint of coordinated sales after an earnings blackout lifts, most likely under 10b5-1 plans, though the specific plan dates are not disclosed in the summary rows. Brian Lillie's 32-lot ladder of small sales across $950-$1,000 is characteristic of an automated/scheduled program rather than a discretionary bet. The July 15 uniform 108-share "Other" entries across six directors are routine equity retainer grants, not trades. Net assessment. Insiders are unambiguously net sellers, and the activity is broad-based across the executive team and board rather than confined to one person. But the context matters: this is selling into a stock that roughly doubled on the AI re-rating and an Nvidia investment, executed in the window right after a record quarter, with no accompanying red-flag disclosures. That reads as neutral-to-mild-concern rather than a bearish tell: there is no insider buying to lean on, but heavy selling after a violent run-up by a full bench of executives is what almost always happens and is weak evidence about forward fundamentals. The clean bearish signal would be absence of the demand commentary; instead management is publicly saying it cannot build fast enough. Treat the selling as portfolio housekeeping, not a business verdict.
12. Scenarios
Bull case. The AI build-out runs for years, not quarters, and Lumentum stays the scarce link. The Greensboro fab converts on schedule and, combined with Sagamihara, Caswell, and Takao, finally lets Lumentum ship into the 30%-plus demand gap instead of rationing it. The 1.6T transceiver ramp lands at richer margins, 200G EMLs become the bulk of the mix, and the OCS multibillion-dollar agreement scales into a real second product line. Co-packaged optics arrives around 2027 and, rather than cannibalizing Lumentum, it converts the company into the indispensable external-laser-source supplier with 2-2.5x the content per link, exactly as the Nvidia partnership envisions. Vertical integration into internal CW lasers lifts transceiver margins further. Nvidia's investment proves to be the seal of approval that pulls in the rest of the ecosystem, and Lumentum exits the decade as a structurally higher-margin, capacity-advantaged laser company whose revenue base has multiplied. Management, having cleared its $600M/40%/20% target two quarters early, keeps under-promising and over-delivering.
Base case. Demand stays strong but Lumentum remains supply-gated, so growth is real and rapid yet paced by how fast fabs come online rather than by orders. The company roughly delivers its guided trajectory - record quarters through FY2026, the 1.6T and 200G mix shifts landing, OCS ramping in the second half of the calendar year - while the Greensboro capacity and the largest CPO revenues stay "next year's story," repeatedly. Margins hold at the new elevated level but do not keep expanding at the extraordinary recent pace as the easy utilization gains are banked. Industrial Tech stays a small, flattish afterthought. Nvidia remains the dominant customer and the concentration is a constant background risk that never quite bites. The share count keeps drifting up from converts and equity issuance. Lumentum is a much larger, more profitable company than it was in 2024, executing well but living quarter to quarter on a supply chase.
Bear case. The AI capex cycle digests. A pause in hyperscaler build-outs, or a reallocation of Nvidia's optical spend toward Coherent or an in-house/CPO path, hits Lumentum's concentrated order book, and the LTAs that felt bulletproof get renegotiated or stretched. Meanwhile the heavy capacity that Lumentum committed to under take-or-pay terms lands right as demand softens - the classic optics glut, the JDSU pattern - and the 2,000-basis-point margin expansion that came from tight supply reverses just as fast when utilization falls. CPO adoption comes faster and more value-shifting than hoped, hollowing out the acquired Cloud Light transceiver franchise even as laser volumes hold. Chinese module competition and a customer's decision to dual-source lasers compress pricing. The expanded share count amplifies the per-share pain. Lumentum is left a bigger but lower-margin company with a fab footprint sized for a demand level that did not persist.
