Filings, not trades: one notice can cover several trades. “Cos” is the number of companies. A dash means no figure, never zero. An asterisk marks a market with a note under Method and gaps.

Method and gaps

Every row comes from the filings each market's regulator or exchange publishes, parsed by MoatMap and dated by the trade date. “Directors” are board members and officers; 5% holders and people closely associated with a director are counted only in the all-filer totals above. Employee share-plan purchases are left out of director buys (80 this month).

Values are converted to US dollars at the latest exchange rate, and a filing whose value exceeds 1.5 times the company's market value is treated as a data error and left out of the dollar totals (it still counts as a filing). A company listed in two markets is counted once, in its home market. Buyback values are given only for markets that report buybacks daily; quarterly reports and programme announcements are counted but not valued.

  • United States: SEC Form 4. Buybacks are quarterly 10-Q totals, so no monthly value.
  • United Kingdom: MAR Article 19 notices; employee share-plan purchases are counted separately.
  • Ireland: Euronext Dublin issuers, filed through the London RNS feed.
  • Germany: We hold no buyback filings for this market yet.
  • Japan: Japan's register records changes in 5%-holder ratios, not director trades, so it has no director rows; its buybacks are period reports.
  • Hong Kong: Companies with A and H shares report their mainland (A-share) buybacks to HKEX too, so those count here, in yuan converted to dollars.
  • Malaysia: A group dealing filed by several related holders counts once.
  • Australia: Buyback values are estimated from the close nearest the report date.
  • South Korea: Korean filings carry no price: values are estimated from the close on the filing date. Buybacks are period reports.
  • Switzerland: Swiss management-transaction notices name the role, not the person. Buybacks are programme announcements, so no monthly value.
  • Taiwan: Taiwan's insider register lists pre-declared transfers (an intent to sell or gift), not executed trades, and states no price. Buybacks are programme announcements, so no monthly value.
  • Mexico: No structured insider register is available, so Mexico has buybacks only.
  • China (A-shares): Executive shareholding changes reported to the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges. Buybacks are programme announcements, so no monthly value.
  • New Zealand: Buyback values are estimated from the close nearest the report date.
  • Brazil: Brazil's CVM register reports by role group, not by person. Buybacks are programme announcements, so no monthly value.
  • Thailand: No buyback feed: the exchange's treasury-stock reports cannot be read automatically. Buybacks are programme announcements, so no monthly value.
  • Indonesia: Indonesian filings can reach us a few days late. Buybacks are programme announcements, so no monthly value.
  • India: Buybacks are programme announcements, so no monthly value.
