How Switzerland scores
Where the top 25 come from, and how the whole Swiss market sits against the global universe. StockRank is a global percentile, so the universe splits evenly into five bands by construction; a market that piles up on the right is scoring well as a whole.

Three Giants, a Long Tail of Niche Leaders, and the Franc
Switzerland is a small country with an outsized stock market: three of the ten largest companies in Europe, a franc that has strengthened against every major currency for fifty years, and a deep bench of industrial, medical and financial specialists that dominate narrow global niches. It is priced as the safest equity market in the world, which is exactly why a factor screen has to work harder here. The list below is where Quality, Value and Momentum agree.
MoatMap scored 178 Swiss stocks on 2026-09-25; 157 cleared the $250M market-cap floor this list applies. The market's average StockRank is 55. Healthcare is the most represented sector in the top 10 (4 names).
The SIX is top-heavy in a way few developed markets are. Nestle, Novartis and Roche account for roughly half of the SMI, and with UBS, Zurich Insurance, ABB and Richemont the ten largest names are most of the index. A market-cap-weighted view of Switzerland is therefore a view of a handful of global multinationals that happen to be domiciled in Zurich, Basel and Vevey. A factor screen looks past that. Below the giants sits a long tail of mid-cap specialists, from dental implants and hearing aids to industrial sensors, flavours and fragrances, logistics software and private banking, many of them family-controlled and most of them the number one or two in their global niche. That is where the Quality pillar tends to find its names, and where the Value pillar occasionally finds a bargain, because coverage thins quickly outside the SMI.
Valuation is the standing challenge. Swiss equities trade at a persistent premium to the rest of Europe, partly because of the quality of the businesses and partly because the franc is a safe-haven currency that global investors hold through crises. A Swiss name that scores well on Value is therefore telling you something rarer than the same score in Milan or Madrid, and a Quality score that is merely average is a warning, because the market's baseline is high. Read the two pillars together: the Swiss version of a value trap is a good business that has stopped growing and still trades as if it were exceptional.
Disclosure is thorough and MoatMap reads it at the source. The SIX Exchange Regulation publishes management transactions under Article 56 of the Listing Rules, with the shares, the price and the consideration, and significant-shareholder notices under the Financial Market Infrastructure Act once a holding crosses 3%. The one thing SIX does not publish is the individual's name: a management transaction is filed as a role (executive board member, non-executive director), so the director-buying callout below the table tells you that insiders at a company were buying, not which one. Buybacks in Switzerland run on a second trading line, and the register carries the programme notice rather than the daily executions, so the buyback mark on this page means an active programme.
Access is easy for most international brokers, and the largest names also trade as US ADRs. Switzerland withholds 35% on dividends, one of the highest rates anywhere, reduced under treaties to 15% for most residents of treaty countries but only by reclaim, which is worth knowing before comparing a Swiss yield against a Dutch or British one. The franc itself has been the quiet source of much of the return for a foreign holder: over most multi-year windows it has appreciated against the dollar, the euro and the pound, so an unhedged position in a Swiss stock has usually carried a currency tailwind on top of the business.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the best Swiss stocks to buy right now?
- The table above ranks MoatMap's top 25 SIX-listed stocks by StockRank, a composite of Quality (ROIC, F-Score, leverage), Value (P/E, EV/EBITDA, P/B, shareholder yield) and Momentum (price trend plus earnings revisions). It refreshes monthly with a stated data date, and each ticker links to a full score breakdown.
- Why do Swiss stocks look expensive on Value?
- Because they usually are. Swiss equities carry a persistent premium to the rest of Europe, for the quality of the businesses and for the safe-haven franc that global investors hold through crises. A Swiss name with a strong Value score is rarer than the same score elsewhere, and a merely average Quality score is a warning because the market's baseline is high.
- Does MoatMap track Swiss insider trades and buybacks?
- Yes, from the SIX Exchange Regulation registers: management transactions under Article 56 of the Listing Rules (shares, price and consideration, filed by role rather than by name) and significant-shareholder notices above 3%. Swiss buybacks run on a second trading line and are disclosed as programme notices, so the buyback mark on this page means an active programme rather than a daily execution.
- What is the difference between registered and bearer shares?
- Several Swiss companies list more than one share class, historically registered shares with voting restrictions and bearer shares without, plus participation certificates that carry no vote at all. The lines trade at slightly different prices and can both clear the screen, so this page keeps one line per company, the higher-scoring one.
- How can foreigners buy Swiss stocks, and what about the withholding tax?
- Most international brokers offer SIX access and the largest names trade as US ADRs. Switzerland withholds 35% on dividends, reduced to 15% under most treaties but only by reclaim, so confirm the process with your broker. The franc has appreciated against the major currencies over most long windows, which has usually helped an unhedged foreign holder.
- How often does this Switzerland ranking refresh?
- A new edition forms on the first scoring run of each calendar month and the page states its data-as-of date. Underlying scores recompute nightly; for the daily view, use the ranked-stocks screener filtered to Switzerland.
