How Spain scores
Where the top 25 come from, and how the whole Spanish market sits against the global universe. StockRank is a global percentile, so the universe splits evenly into five bands by construction; a market that piles up on the right is scoring well as a whole.

Two Banks, a Latin American Overlay, and the Latibex Filter
Spain has been one of the fastest-growing large economies in Europe since 2022 and its stock market is still priced for the crisis years: a board led by two global banks, a telecom and a utility, with a mid-cap bench in infrastructure, renewables, hotels, textiles and pharmaceuticals that runs businesses across Latin America and the rest of Europe. MoatMap scores the BME's domestic listings, and the list below is where Quality, Value and Momentum agree.
MoatMap scored 104 Spanish stocks on 2026-09-25; 83 cleared the $250M market-cap floor this list applies. The market's average StockRank is 62. Industrials is the most represented sector in the top 10 (5 names).
The Madrid board is concentrated at the top and unusually international in what those top names do. Santander and BBVA earn more in Brazil, Mexico and the rest of Latin America than they do at home, Telefonica and Iberdrola are large in the same region, and Inditex, the exchange's most valuable company, sells clothes in ninety countries. A Spanish large-cap portfolio is therefore partly a bet on the peso, the real and Latin American growth, which is worth knowing when the Momentum pillar moves. Below them sits the part of the market a factor screen actually rewards: infrastructure and construction groups, renewable developers, hotel operators, a large pharmaceutical group, and a bench of industrial and consumer mid caps, several of them family-controlled and most of them under-covered outside Spain.
This page filters to Spanish-domiciled companies, and the reason is a board within the board. BME's Latibex market quotes Latin American issuers in euros for Spanish investors, and those lines score like any other row: on the September 2026 data, Petrobras took the top of the raw Spanish list, with Vale and Usiminas further down. A page titled Best Spanish Stocks that headlines a Brazilian oil major is wrong, so the list keeps companies whose registered domicile is Spain. The stated cost is a handful of dual-listed names that file a foreign domicile, IAG among them, which remain in the ranked-stocks screener.
Disclosure follows the EU Market Abuse Regulation and MoatMap reads the CNMV's register directly. Directors and closely associated persons must notify trades within three business days, and the regulator publishes them as standardised MAR notifications carrying the person, the role, the instrument, the aggregated volume and the price. Buybacks are disclosed through the CNMV's other-relevant-information channel as per-day summary tables, which the feed parses where the table is unambiguous and skips where it is not. Both feed the director-buying and buyback marks on this page.
Access is easy through most international brokers, several of the largest names trade as US ADRs, and settlement is in euros. Spain withholds 19% on dividends paid to non-residents, reduced under treaties by reclaim, and levies a financial-transaction tax on purchases of shares in its largest companies. Spanish companies also have a habit of paying part of the dividend in scrip, new shares in place of cash, which flatters a headline yield and dilutes the holders who take cash; the yield column on this page is the trailing cash figure the fundamentals carry, so check the payment form before relying on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the best Spanish stocks to buy right now?
- The table above ranks MoatMap's top 25 Spanish-domiciled BME stocks by StockRank, a composite of Quality (ROIC, F-Score, leverage), Value (P/E, EV/EBITDA, P/B, shareholder yield) and Momentum (price trend plus earnings revisions). It refreshes monthly with a stated data date, and each ticker links to a full score breakdown.
- Why does this page exclude foreign companies listed in Madrid?
- BME's Latibex market quotes Latin American issuers in euros, and on raw StockRank Petrobras headed the Spanish list in September 2026, with Vale and Usiminas further down. A page about Spanish stocks that headlines a Brazilian oil major is wrong, so this page keeps Spanish-domiciled companies only. The foreign lines still appear in the ranked-stocks screener.
- Why do Spanish banks depend so much on Latin America?
- Santander and BBVA built large retail banks in Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Argentina during the 1990s and 2000s, and those units now earn more than the Spanish business. Their scores move with Latin American currencies and rates as much as with Spain, which is worth knowing when the Momentum column shifts.
- Does MoatMap track Spanish insider trades and buybacks?
- Yes. The Spain feed reads the CNMV's directors' notification register (standardised MAR Article 19 forms filed within three business days, with the person, role, aggregated volume and price) and the buyback programme reports filed through the CNMV's relevant-information channel. The callouts on this page draw on them.
- What is a scrip dividend and why does it matter here?
- Several Spanish companies offer part of the dividend as new shares instead of cash. That flatters a headline yield and dilutes holders who take cash, so the trailing cash yield on this page can differ from the figure a company advertises. Check the payment form before relying on the number.
- How often does this Spain ranking refresh?
- A new edition forms on the first scoring run of each calendar month and the page states its data-as-of date. Underlying scores recompute nightly; for the daily view, use the ranked-stocks screener filtered to Spain.
